Choosing a frontloader cargo bike is a significant investment, whether you're replacing a car for school runs, expanding your business logistics, or simply embracing a greener lifestyle. At Rothar, the frontloader range is diverse, offering everything from ultra-compact folding bikes to massive family haulers.

The key to finding your perfect match lies in balancing three critical factors: storage flexibility, passenger capacity, and power requirements. Here is how the current lineup compares.

1. Storage: the game changer of compact models

Storage is often the dealbreaker for urban cyclists. While many frontloaders are long and bulky, Rothar's range includes models specifically engineered to solve this problem.

The undisputed champion of storage is the Muli (Muskel or Motor). Unlike traditional frontloading cargo bikes that require a dedicated space like a a garage or a garden, the Muli features a revolutionary folding system. Its front cargo basket collapses in a very simple movement, shrinking the bike's width from a full cargo size down to a mere 276mm. This transforms it from a cargo hauler into a compact city bike almost instantly.

Crucially, the Muli's handlebars are designed to swing 90 degrees to the side via a quick-release clamp. This allows the bike to fit into incredibly tight spaces, such as standard elevators, train compartments, or small apartment hallways, without needing to remove the wheels.

If you need a bit more cargo space but still value a smaller footprint, the Yoonit and the Omnium E-Mini-Max V3 are excellent middle grounds.

  • The Yoonit is a "mini" frontloader. While it doesn't fold, its compact dimensions make it significantly easier to store and maneuver than the full-size models.
  • The Omnium E-Mini-Max V3 is designed with a shorter wheelbase and a compact box, making it nimbler in city traffic and easier to park than its larger siblings.

If you opt for the Dolly Joy or Lovens Explorer 2, be aware that these are full-size frontloaders with fixed frames and large, non-folding boxes. While they offer superior stability and maximum cargo volume, they require a dedicated garage, shed, or secure outdoor space.

2. Passenger capacity: from solo commutes to family haulers

All frontloaders in the Rothar range share a low-center-of-gravity box at the front, but the intended capacity varies significantly.

  • The compact duo (Muli & Yoonit): The Muli features a 90-liter basket, perfectly sized for one or two children (depending on age) or a mix of groceries and gear. It is ideal for smaller families or solo commuters. The Yoonit is explicitly designed for two children. It offers a slightly larger box than the Muli, providing a comfortable ride for two kids while remaining compact enough for tight urban environments.

  • The mid-size option (Omnium e-Mini-Max V3): The Omnium e-Mini-Max V3 sits between the minis and the giants. While it has a compact rack, it is best suited for one child plus cargo, or significant cargo alone. It is an excellent choice for individuals or couples who need to transport one child along with groceries, equipment, or business supplies, while enjoying a bike that feels less cumbersome than a full-size frontloader.

  • The full-size giants (Lovens & Dolly Joy): The Dolly Joy and Lovens Explorer 2 offer the maximum capacity in the range. Their boxes measure approximately 100cm in length, providing ample space for up to four children when equipped with the appropriate child seats and safety harnesses. These models are designed for larger families who need to transport multiple kids simultaneously, along with school bags, sports equipment, or weekly grocerie

3. Power: matching the motor to your terrain and your load

Your choice of power source depends heavily on your daily route, the weight you carry, and your physical preferences.

Manual and pedal-Assist Options The Muli is available as a purely mechanical bike (Muskel), offering a lightweight, maintenance-free experience for flat urban environments. For those who want a little extra help, it can be upgraded with a Muli Motor ST or Pendix e-drive system.

The Dolly Joy, and Lovens Explorer 2 are pedal-assist electric bikes. The Lovens Explorer 2 and Dolly Joy are fitted with a Bosch mid-drive motor , delivering 75Nm to 100Nm of power. These setups provide a natural riding feel and are excellent for riders who enjoy the exercise but need a boost on steep inclines.

The Omnium e-Mini-Max V3 comes fully electric, featuring a powerful mid-drive motor that makes carrying loads or climbing hills effortless.

Making the final decision

  • Choose the Muli if storage space is your primary constraint, you need to take the bike in the car, or you prefer a compact, agile ride for one or two children.
  • Choose the Yoonit if you have two children and need a compact frontloader that is easier to store than a full-size model but offers more space than the Muli.
  • Choose the Omnium E-Mini-Max V3 if you need a fully electric bike with a smaller footprint than the full-size models, perfect for one child and urban commuting with cargo.
  • Choose the Dolly Joy or Lovens Explorer 2 if you have a dedicated storage space, need to transport three or four children, and want the flexibility to choose a high-power electric configuration.

Every model in Rothar's frontloader lineup is built with high-quality components like hydraulic disc brakes and puncture-resistant tires, ensuring safety and durability. The right choice ultimately comes down to balancing your storage reality with your daily transport needs.
